The backlash against Meta’s camera glasses has reached the people who run America’s jails and police stations. According to a Guardian investigation, agencies from Maine to California now treat the frames as a counterintelligence and security risk.
New York’s counterterrorism unit spelled out the worry in a memo sent to officers early this year, describing how a wearer could quietly capture footage inside a police station or a detention building. Exposed details like cell layouts, camera placements, or patrol routines could put those facilities in danger, it warned. The memo pointed to viral TikTok video from a South Carolina detention center.
The concern is not theoretical. Detention facilities routinely confiscate phones and cameras, but the glasses’ ordinary Ray-Ban and Oakley look helps them pass inspection. In one widely shared clip, the wearer narrates the confusion around him: people just do not know about Meta glasses.
Federal agencies have issued their own warnings, the report adds. The scrutiny widens a set of restrictions on camera glasses that already spans courts, concert venues, nightclubs, and schools, as the devices blur the line between eyewear and surveillance tool.
