Valve’s first standalone headset has now been handled on camera before Valve said a word about it. A video titled “Our first 30 mins with the Steam Frame” appeared on the Linus Tech Tips side channel ShortCircuit, then went private within minutes. Copies were already circulating.
Across the 17-minute clip, Linus Sebastian describes a headset that sits close to the Valve Index but carries its weight better. A bundled Wi-Fi dongle streamed PC games with no cable, and he found dropouts imperceptible. He also flags expandable SD storage and a physical interpupillary distance lock so the lenses hold their setting during play.
Not everything impressed. The ABXY buttons on the controllers drew complaints, the LCD panels showed color fringing despite sharp output, and the monochrome passthrough carried visible stitching lines where cameras overlap.
The leak lands days before Valve is expected to open pre-orders. Road to VR notes the footage is not as damaging as Valve’s own setup clip last month, or the backend changes that revealed a possible Half-Life: Alyx bundle. What remains sealed is the part buyers care about most: price and a shipping date.
That silence has grown louder. Valve’s Steam Machine console landed at $1,050 in August, above expectations, and memory and storage prices keep climbing. SteamVR 2.17 shipped to all users this week, and units have been moving through US shipments for weeks. The software is ready. SteamOS is ready. Only the number is missing.
