Meta is squeezing new life out of the Quest 3 as Valve’s Steam Frame looms. The latest Horizon OS update adds an Extended Refresh Rates mode to the headset, letting the panel run faster than its original 120Hz spec, with two tiers depending on how the device is configured.
Regular owners get 207Hz at full resolution, while developer mode unlocks 240Hz through display scaling that downscales the image before upscaling it back to the panel. The Quest 3S and Quest 2 miss out entirely, as their panels cap at 120Hz. The change was first flagged by X user Luna.
Few native apps are built for such speeds, and Application Spacewarp can’t extrapolate beyond 120Hz on the Quest 3 chip, so the headroom is mostly theoretical for now. Virtual Desktop’s Guy Godin already added 144 FPS streaming support, noting video decoders strain past that point. R2VR sees the move as a competitive answer to Steam Frame and possibly a late-life gesture to move remaining stock.
