For anyone uneasy about being filmed by smart glasses, Meta may soon sell a pair that cannot film anything. The Information reports that a camera-free model is in the works.
The model carries the codename Luna. Six microphones and temple-arm speakers replace the lens hardware, giving wearers a voice channel to Meta AI and the company’s Muse agent, with a side button as the shortcut. Losing the optics let designers shrink the arms until Luna reads as a normal pair of glasses.
Meta plans to unveil Luna at its Connect developer conference on September 23 and 24 and start shipping in October in two styles, Clubmaster and Burbank.
The timing is deliberate. Meta’s Ray-Ban and Oakley frames sell well, but critics have branded them “pervert glasses” after repeated reports of people being filmed without consent. Regulators, courts, swimming pools and nightclubs have all pushed back, and Meta has spent 2026 patching loopholes in its recording light.
Road to VR argues the move is not a retreat. Meta still trains its AI on user data, and augmented reality glasses cannot work without outward-facing sensors, so camera-free frames look like a way to serve privacy-shy buyers while trimming cost.
Not everyone sees a fix. Six microphones on frames that look ordinary may raise their own questions, particularly after Apple’s always-on audio recording watches drew criticism this month.
