Version 1.0 of Meta’s Immersive Web SDK landed on September 24, with gaze-and-pinch as the headline addition: the wearer looks at a target and pinches to select it, with no handheld device in the loop.
According to the Horizon OS release notes for WebXR, the version adds gaze-and-pinch, and the SDK’s RayInteractable and grabbing systems were reworked to fold it in. Cleanup of depth sessions got attention too, as did scene mesh updates and general runtime stability. The @iwsdk/core entry is dated 1.0.0 for the same day.
Apple made the gesture familiar on Vision Pro, where a glance picks and a tap of thumb against index finger confirms. Meta’s version lives in a browser rather than a store, so it arrives with no review queue and nothing to install.
Shipping a toolkit is not the same as shipping a product. Until some developer adopts 1.0 and rebuilds, nothing changes for anyone browsing on Quest. Which Horizon OS builds and which browsers actually expose the input are questions Meta has left unanswered.
Under the hood, Three.js rendering is paired with an entity component system, and the toolkit stacks on locomotion and grabbing, spatial audio, Havok physics, scene understanding and spatial interface markup. By Meta’s own count, WebXR experiences were drawing an average of more than a million people every month on Quest, a figure the company has tracked since Connect 2024.
