Apple is working on a new head-mounted device under the codename N224, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the project sits on “life support”. The headset is described as taking after Meta’s new VR Glasses, which push the battery and processing into a separate puck.
Engineers are reportedly weighing four concepts. One offloads part of the hardware into a companion component, echoing Meta’s puck. Some senior staff are said to see a tethered build as a poor experience after the Vision Pro, and would rather have an all-in-one design that is lighter and cheaper, an engineering problem Apple has not cracked.
Gurman puts a possible launch in late 2028 or early 2029, and warns there is no guarantee it arrives at all. The glasses half of the roadmap is firmer: he repeats a goal of shipping some form of Apple Glass by the end of 2027, a window he and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have floated before.
The expected first pair is said to follow Meta’s Ray-Ban playbook, with audio, a camera and smart features but no display. A screen would come in a later generation. Apple has not commented on the report.
