Global eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica has acquired French XR startup Lynx in a full buyout, acquiring all of the company’s IP, assets, and most of its team — and likely killing the upcoming Lynx-R2 mixed reality headset in the process.
Lynx founder and CEO Stan Larroque confirmed the deal in a public email to backers on July 16, calling it a “formal acquisition” that includes the name, domain, databases, code, 3D files, and manufacturing know-how. Most of the team has already been hired by EssilorLuxottica, though Larroque himself is not making the move — he is joining Paris-based drone company Parrot in a key leadership role.
The Lynx-R2, a standalone mixed reality headset revealed earlier this year with a surprisingly wide field of view in a compact package, now has no announced future under its new owner. Given EssilorLuxottica’s deep partnership with Meta on Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, the Quest competitor appears unlikely to survive.
