Following Apple’s announcement that VisionOS 27 will support third-party motion controllers for Vision Pro, the company has now published a comprehensive set of technical specifications and requirements for accessory makers building spatial controllers.
Published in the latest version of Apple’s Accessory Design Guidelines for Apple Devices, a new section called “Spatial Accessories” offers an in-depth technical explanation of how third-party motion controllers for Vision Pro should be built and how they should interface with the headset. The document covers everything from optical tracking requirements to wireless communication protocols.
Every detail Apple just handed to hardware makers
In section 20.9.2, the document explores a complete reference design for a third-party motion controller. The controllers must use active infrared LEDs that Vision Pro’s onboard cameras can track with high precision — the same optical tracking approach Apple demonstrated during WWDC 2026’s developer session on Spatial Accessories.
Key technical requirements include:
- Active IR LED placement for six-degree-of-freedom tracking
- Low-latency Bluetooth communication with Vision Pro
- Support for Apple’s standardized spatial accessory protocol
- Battery life minimums for sustained spatial sessions
- Form factor guidelines that accommodate one-handed or two-handed use
From walled garden to welcome mat
This is a significant step for Apple’s spatial computing ambitions. By publishing detailed specs for third-party controllers, Apple is signaling a move toward an open accessory ecosystem — one where companies like Logitech, HTC, or boutique VR controller makers can build hardware that works natively with Vision Pro.
The move mirrors what Apple did with iPhone and iPad accessories, eventually spawning a massive market of third-party cases, keyboards, and game controllers. For Vision Pro, the stakes are higher: motion controllers are essential for productivity workflows, creative applications, and immersive gaming.
More choice, more controllers, more reasons to buy in
Currently, Vision Pro relies on hand and eye tracking for most interactions. While elegant, that input model falls short for precision tasks like 3D modeling, CAD work, or fast-paced gaming. Third-party motion controllers could bridge that gap, making Vision Pro a more serious tool for professionals who need tactile, high-precision input.
With Apple’s guidelines now public, third-party accessory makers can begin development immediately. The first third-party motion controllers for Vision Pro could hit the market within months, arriving alongside the VisionOS 27 update expected later this year.
